McDonald’s Malaysia Partners with Indah Water Konsortium to Strengthen Environmental Sustainability Efforts
KUALA LUMPUR, 27 FEBRUARY 2025 – McDonald's Malaysia has officially signed a Fats, Oil, and Grease (FOG) Desludging Services Agreement with the national sewerage company, Indah Water Konsortium (IWK) Sdn Bhd, for the provision of desludging services for grease traps at almost 300 McDonald's restaurants nationwide. This partnership reinforces McDonald’s Malaysia’s commitment to operational efficiency and environmental sustainability, ensuring proper waste management while maintaining the highest hygiene standards in its restaurants.
Through this partnership, IWK will provide regular desludging services to manage FOG accumulation in grease traps, preventing blockages, minimizing plumbing issues, and improving the overall performance of kitchen drainage systems. This initiative aligns with McDonald's Malaysia’s broader sustainability efforts to reduce environmental impact and comply with local environmental regulations.
Dato’ Haji Azmir Jaafar, Managing Director and Local Operating Partner of McDonald's Malaysia, emphasized the importance of this partnership in enhancing operational efficiency and environmental responsibility. “As a brand that serves 9 million customers every month, it is our responsibility to ensure that our restaurant operations are not only efficient but also environmentally sustainable. Through our collaboration with IWK, we are taking proactive steps to prevent water pollution, reduce waste, and contribute to Malaysia’s sustainability goals. This partnership reflects McDonald's Malaysia’s continued commitment to responsible waste management, benefiting both our customers and the environment.”
Narendran Maniam, Chief Executive Officer of Indah Water Konsortium, echoed similar sentiments, highlighting the environmental significance of this collaboration. “We are pleased to have McDonald’s Malaysia join our efforts in environmental sustainability, reinforcing our shared commitment to a cleaner, greener future. Proper grease trap maintenance is crucial in preventing FOG from entering sewerage systems, reducing blockages, and mitigating environmental harm. Through this collaboration, we ensure responsible waste management, contributing to cleaner water sources and a healthier environment – aligning with IWK’s mission for sustainable wastewater management.”
Beyond operational improvements, this initiative also supports a circular economy approach by enabling the repurposing of collected grease for potential biodiesel and biogas production. This ensures that waste is not only minimized but also transformed into valuable resources, further strengthening McDonald’s Malaysia’s sustainability agenda.
In addition to environmental benefits, regular grease trap maintenance plays a crucial role in enhancing restaurant cleanliness. By ensuring routine desludging, McDonald’s Malaysia is committed to providing a cleaner and safer dining environment, improving hygiene and the overall restaurant experience.
This partnership marks another milestone in McDonald’s Malaysia’s ongoing environmental efforts, complementing its sustainability initiatives such as green restaurant designs, the installation of solar PV facilities with Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), the installation of EV chargers at selected McDonald’s outlets, and comprehensive waste reduction programs. Committed to driving positive environmental impact, McDonald’s Malaysia continues to collaborate with like-minded partners to advance sustainability efforts – an approach that aligns with United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 17: Partnership for the Goals.
