“MY WIFE, MY ENGLISH TEACHER” Since I was in school, I was weak in English. Having the opportunity to further my studies in a country that does not use English as their first language weakened my proficiency in English. I realized my weakness and once prayed that one day I could marry an English teacher that could correct and improve me in the language. Remembering of the prayer I once made was one of the reasons that make me believe that IDA SYARINA BINTI MD ISA is my destiny to be my beloved wife. We met each other in 2012 and got married in 2013. Teacher Ida started her carrier as an English teacher when she was posted at SMK Tun Haji Abdul Malek in 2014. Ever since we know each other, she never gets tired to correct my mistakes in using the language and keeps helping and encouraging me to improve my proficiency in it. She has helped me to have a strong foundation of the language. This has given a big impact in my carrier, which I have to make reports, slide presentations and communicate in English with native people. Even though our aim to speak fully in English at home has not achieved yet, I believe that we will one day, InsyaAllah, as she always pushes us to speak English even to mix it with Bahasa Melayu. Teacher Ida has not only been a great teacher to me, she is also a great teacher to our children. Despite the workloads that she has at school and at home, she never miss to help our children at home to learn. For my eldest son, she always guides and encourages him to complete his homework and activity books. Furthermore, she shows flash cards to my second son to encourage his learning and developments. She will also read out bedtime stories with wonderful intonations and expressions before my children’s bedtime. I noticed that my children enjoy the bedtime stories session with her more than me, which I am glad to see. After putting our children to bed, she will use the time to complete her works and do final preparation of the activities that she will do with her students the next day. At school, she is known as a dedicated, caring, sporting and strict teacher. Teaching English, the least favorite subject, is a big challenge especially in a normal ‘sekolah harian’. She has to face many challenges at school; students with no interest with the language, zero basic and even students who do not even understand the language. Even so, I can see that Teacher Ida does not easily give up. Most of the time she will think and examine the best and interesting methods to attract those kinds of students. Besides, she is also passionate in training and preparing her students for choral speaking competition. She once trained her students intensively just for a week and got the third place in the choral speaking competition. Be it curriculum or co-curriculum, she always does her best. I can see that her effort is endless. In conjunction with ‘Anugerah Guru Inspirasi’ organised by Mc Donald, I proudly nominate Puan Ida Syarina Binti Md Isa to receive the award. I am not nominating her because she is my wife, but for what I have witnessed her passion as a great teacher not only for her students but also for me as her husband, and her two wonderful sons.
